The Africa Centre of Excellence in Phytochemicals, Textile and Renewable Energy at Moi University was launched on 13th – 14th September 2017 at Sirikwa Hotel, Eldoret. The Centers aims to advance technology development and innovation in Phytochemicals, Textile and Renewable energy through delivery of quality post-graduate training and collaborative research. The Launch was attended by national, regional and International partners who represented the partner institution (Dr. K. Chelule (KIRDI, Kenya), Prof. M. S. Elarabi (University of Gezira, Sudan), Dr. Baby Nyoni (National University of Science and Technology, Zimbabwe), Prof. Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha (Commission for University Education, Kenya), Ms. Yvonne Kirema (Biogas International), Prof. D. K. Some (University of Eldoret), Dr. Ludeki Chweya (Kenya School of Government), Dr. Wilson Babu (Busitema University), Dr. Maurice Bolo (Scinnovent Center) and Moi University representatives from various sections. On 16th – 17th October 2017, the Center organized a Management and Leadership workshop involving regional and national participants.

Scholarships and Accredited Programmes The Center has awarded scholarships to 17 students enrolled for PhD and Masters in Energy Studies, MSc. in Industrial Engineering and MSc. Textile Engineering programmes. The regional students are from Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Sudan and four students are under the GTA sponsorship between Moi University and RUFORUM. Three programmes were accredited and an advert put on RUFORUM and other ACEs Centers for scholarship on: Doctor of Philosophy in Analytical Chemistry, Doctor of Philosophy in Materials and Textile Engineering and Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry.

The Center also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nocart Ltd, Finland which is a private company in the Energy sector. A publication on Biological Production of Biohydrogen from Organic Substrates was presented in an International Conference on Petrochemistry and Chemical Engineering on 13th -14th November, 2017 in Atlanta, USA.
