Meet Cohort One 2017 MCF@RUFORUM Students


The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with Mastercard Foundation are implementing an eight year program “Transforming Agricultural Universities in Africa to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development (TAGDev)”. Under this program, 220 students will be trained as part of training the next generation of AgLeaders for Africa in Africa through an innovative agricultural training model. In this edition, a cohort of the first 30 students from eight countries; Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda are presented.

IW1A0485Jaka Margaret Loruk is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme in Food and Agribusiness at Gulu University (Uganda); 2017-2021. She is Ugandan by nationality, a born of 1993 from the Karamoja region in Northern Uganda. Margaret is from a family of three girls and the only one still at school. Margaret is focused at becoming an employer and climate change actor seeking to improve climate change resilience in her region. She is also a determined young agriculturalist with a vision to open up a learning centre for agriculture to benefit nearby schools and farmers in Moroto district.

IW1A0434Ong’ayo Mercyline Jerusa is enrolled into the Master of Science program in Agri-Enterprise Development at Egerton University; 2017-2019. Jerusa is a Kenyan national, born in 1987 and grew up in the Western Kenya. Her dream is to set up an agri-entrepreneurship consultancy and demonstration farm in Kenya, which will offer comprehensive training in Agri-Entrepreneurship to smallholder farmers and entire community for general improvement of life, food and poverty eradication.

IW1A0655John Kamau Muthoni is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at Egerton University; 2017-2021. He is a Kenyan national, born in 1996 in Tamoyoto, Molo. John is passionate about agriculture that he has practiced from childhood. John’s dream is to build on the skills gained from this program to become an entrepreneur, with a private agricultural research farm, and respond to farmer challenges with innovative solutions.

IW1A0037Ngenoh Geoffrey Cheruiyot is enrolled in the Master of Science in Agri-Enterprise Development at Egerton University at Egerton University; 2017-2019. He is a Kenyan national, born in 1990 and grew up in Rift Valley in Kenya. Despite numerous challenges in his education journey, Geoffrey’s perseverance has been pivotal for his attainment of education.  Geoffrey aims to form a transformational scheme for youth with entrepreneurial skills to encourage innovative agricultural development that leads to sustainable livelihoods in Kenya, and Africa in large.

IW1A9499Ayiri, Joshua Bayahkebe is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science program in Food and Agribusiness at Gulu University (Uganda); 2017-2021.  Joshua is a Nigerian national, born in 1996. Joshua has devotion and motivation to become a transformational leader. Joshua has a purpose to educate and mentor youth on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and growing to become big enterprise that will create job opportunities with potential to reduce crime in Nigeria.

IW1A9945Gabriel Mahindu Kwendo (a Kenyan) was born in 1990 in Western Kenya, Vihiga County. Gabriel is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at Egerton University; 2017-2021. His dream is to become an agricultural researcher who will disseminate relevant agricultural knowledge and skills to smallholder farmers in Kenya to enhance product diversity and post-harvest management so as to ensure income, food and nutrition security.

IW1A9991Aciro Lucy is Ugandan national, born in 1993 in Gulu, Northern Uganda. She was born at the height of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency. Lucy is enrolled in the Master of Science in Agri-enterprises Development at Gulu University; 2017-2019. Her dream is to become a member of parliament and create an enabling environment for Ugandan local farmers to reap profits from their agricultural outputs through favorable government policies.

IW1A0648Redempter Mbula Mutinda is a Kenyan national, born in 1991 in Mukusu village, Masinga sub-county in Machakos County. Redempter is enrolled in a Master of Science in Agri-Enterprise Development at Egerton University; 2017-2019. She is determined to become a transformational leader through economic empowerment of smallholder farmers. Redempter has a purpose to improve the household income of smallholder farmers in Kenya through research in agricultural value chains leading to sustainable market linkages that increase the net farmer returns and income.

IW1A9602Agbolosoo John Atsu (Ghanaian) was born in 1990, and grew up in the Volta Region of Ghana, a region where fish farming and vegetable crop production on small scale are the main occupations and sources of income of the community. John is currently pursuing Master of Science in Agri enterprise Development at Egerton University (Kenya); 2017-2019. He has a dream to become CSR director in Ghana to reduce poverty and also to increase more jobs for youth in his community.

IW1A0476Sarudzai Muzhange (Zimbabwean) was born in 1994, and grew up in Makumbe Mission, Domboshava with her aunt, being the second born in the family of three children (girls). She is enrolled in a Master of Science programme in Agri-Enterprise Developemnt at Gulu University (Uganda) for a period of two years (2017-2019). Sarudzai has a purpose to become an expert in Agri-Enterprise development, to train and mentor youth aged 20-30 years in Zimbabwe, by empowering them through promotion of Agri-value addition.

IW1A9489Othieno Rogers is Ugandan by nationality, born in 1992 in Lwanika village, Mayuge district, along the shores of Lake Victoria. Rogers fought his way through hard work which inspired his uncle to support him through his primary and secondary school journeys. He is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication Management at Gulu University (2017-2021), with the purpose to go back and impact his communities at the end of his study.

IW1A0463Mugonya John is Ugandan by nationality, born in 1987 in Bukoto in Uganda. John is enrolled in a Master of Science programme in Agri-Enterprise Development at Gulu University; 2017-2019. John is hoping to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable to undertake relevant research and initiate agricultural enterprises that will benefit his community.

IW1A0776Elizabeth Muthoni Nderitu is Kenyan by nationality, born in 1992. Elizabeth is enrolled in a Master of Science programme in Community Studies and Extension at Egerton University; 2017-2019. She hopes to achieve her dream of escalating above all obstacles and leaving a positive impact in peoples’ lives.

IW1A9476Judith Cheruiyot is Kenyan by nationality and a born of 1991. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science programme in Community Studies and Extension at Egerton University (2017-2019), and envisions to be a leader and a role model to younger generation with great interest of changing the youth mindsets in agriculture and business.

IW1A0651Ng’ang’a Mary Mukuhi (a Kenyan) was born in 1990 in Elburgon farm, Nakuru county Kenya. Mukuhi has been an active member of Agricultural club and a class representative at Egerton University, and is currently pursuing Bachelor of Science in agriculture (2017-2021) at Egerton University. Mary is hoping with knowledge to be acquired through this training, to give back to the community by improving the mode of farming and change their mindset to take agriculture as a business.

IW1A0426Draru Emily (a Ugandan) was born in 1995 in the Arua district of Uganda. She studied Horticulture Production and Management for two years (2014-2016) at Bukalasa Agricultural College (BAC) in Uganda. Currently, she is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme in Agriculture at Egerton University in Kenya (2017-2021).

IW1A0621Okelokoko Nobert is a Ugandan by nationality, Acholi by tribe and born of 1991 in Pader District. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science programme in Food and Agribusiness at Gulu University (2017-2021). Nobert has high interest to study and challenge community transformation in his society and Africa as a young leader.

IW1A9597Kidega Kenneth is Ugandan by nationality, and a born of 1992. Kenneth has a Bachelor degree in Animal production and Management from Busitema University in Uganda. He is currently undertaking a Master of Science programme in Food Security and Community Nutrition (2017-2019) at Gulu University.

IW1A0028Manjale Mohamed (Tanzanian) was born in 1989 in Korogwe village. He fought his way through primary and secondary education, and attended a Diploma program in General Agriculture at the College of Agricultural and Natural Resources. Currently, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Science programme in Agriculture at Egerton University in Kenya (2017-2021).

IW1A0641Amwine Lamech (Ugandan) was born in 1988, and grew up in the district of Bushenyi   in Uganda. Lamech is a focused transformational leader, educative and inspirational, passionate about community transformation and making landmark contributions in people’s lives. Lamech is enrolled in a Master of Science Programme in Community Studies and Extension (2017-2019) at Egerton University in Kenya.

IW1A0468Norah Akiyai is from Ugandan and was born in 1991. She grew up in the Eastern part of Uganda in Amuria district. After primary and secondary education, she volunteered with PAG/KIDO on food security project. She is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme in Food and Agribusiness (2017-2021) at Gulu University (Uganda).

IW1A0001Sambrumo Matayo Gad (Kenyan) was born in 1993, in Busia County in Kenya. Gad studied Agribusiness Management and Enterprise Development at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is currently enrolled in a Master of Science programme in Agri-Enterprise Development at Egerton University (2017-2019).

IW1A0014Awuor Joseph Odhiambo is Kenyan by Nationality, and a born of 1989 in Migori County (Kenya) along the shore of Lake Victoria. Joseph has had strong interest in Agriculture. He is enrolled in a Master of Science programme in Community Studies and Extension (2017-2019) at Egerton University, and will go back and impact his community through innovations and demand-driven research outputs in response to agricultural development policies.

IW1A0623Nalwoga Racheal is Ugandan by nationality and a born of 1997 in Mulago in Kampala district. She has great interest in poultry, piggery and arable farming. Racheal is currently pursuing Bachelor of Science programme in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication management (2017-2021) at Gulu University (Uganda)

IW1A9583Lucky Nyasulu, 26, is a Malawian and coming from Karonga district in Malawi. She holds a Bachelor degree in Irrigation Engineering from Lilongwe University Agriculture and Natural Resources. Lucky is currently pursuing a Master of Science programme in Community Studies and Extension (2017-2019) at Egerton University. She aspires to become an agent who will advocate for change and become part of solution to the problems smallholder farmers are facing in developing countries like Malawi.

IW1A0489Dusabimana Emmanuel (a Rwandese) was born in 1994. He grew up in a Bihinga village. Commitment and determination to excellence have been Emmanuel’s key values during his primary and secondary level education. Emmanuel is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science programme in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication Management (2017-2021) at Gulu University in Uganda.

IW1A0471Namulondo Priscilla is a Ugandan, and was born in 1997. She is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication management (2017-2021) at Gulu University (Uganda). Priscilla has a dream to become a CEO of her own company employing around 500 employees, and to encourage and empower people with skills in mechanization of agriculture.

IW1A0769Namuyombia Gloria (Ugandan) was born in 1998. She is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication management (2017-2021) at Gulu University (Uganda). Gloria was supported through BRAC scholarship in Uganda, during her advanced level studies.

IW1A9607Katusime Sarah is a Ugandan national, and a born of 1994, in Kiryandongo district in Western Uganda. Sara holds a diploma in forestry from Nyabyeye Forestry College. Sara is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science programme in Food and Agri-business (2017-2021) at Gulu University in the Faculty of Agriculture & Environment.

PrimaKyohairwe Prima is a Ugandan national born in 1991. Prima grew up in Buhweju district of Uganda, where she undertook her primary and secondary level education. She is currently enrolled in a Master of Science in Agri-Enterprise Development (2017-2019) at Gulu University, and is hoping to acquire necessary skills and knowledge to empower rural and impact their communities, after her studies.
