Agshare II: A focus on Agricultural Economics Department at Haramaya University

Agshare provides strategies for a logical institutional approach to teaching, research and community development. The AgShare core strategy is a research-based approach for the co-creation and publication of agricultural knowledge within and across stakeholder groups. Multiple-media Open Educational Resources (OER) are produced, shared, modified, and made freely available through learning networks. Students engage in participatory action research with identified communities and supported by their research supervisors.

The Agshare II Objectives being implemented by the Agricultural Economics Department at Haramaya University intend to;

  1. Produce three OER modules for three MSc courses namely: Agricultural marketing and price analysis, Research methods, and Institutional and behavioral economics
  2. Produce three MSc theses
  3. Produce three case study reports from the MSc research
  4. Produce three video case studies

What have we achieved so far?

  1. Modules produced, reviewed and incorporation of comments in progress
  2. Masters research topics identified, students recruited, students proposals successfully defended
  3. Video case studies under production and review.
  4. Continuous professional support has been delivered to the students
  5. Field visits to the study sites conducted
  6. Preliminary findings from the students’ data collection and analysis
  7. Two draft Masters theses were produced and submitted to the respective supervisors
  8. Case study reports under production

Challenges and opportunities for collaborations

  1. There is a long procedure and duration for defending Masters theses at Haramaya University because of the decision to conduct proposal defenses only four times a year.
  2. Technical capacity gap caused by the appointment of the formerly trained and experienced video instructor to a deanship position.
  3. Distant study research sites and communication problems.
  4. Visa requirement and the cost implications to conduct surveys at the vegetable terminal markets (Hargessa, Somali land) from Kombolcha.
