RUFORUM recognizes African universities have potential to lead the change needed for development yet they are faced with staffing challenges. In responding to this challenge, RUFORUM has proactively contributed to enhancing the capacity of university staff / faculty, provided increased opportunities for their advancement in professional career to their highest levels through regional integrated doctoral training programmes since 2008.

Fanuel Kapute not only is he a testimony of the success, he is also a beneficiary of RUFORUM regional Doctorate Programme – Aquaculture and Fisheries Sciences. Now an Associate Professor, Prof. Kapute’s PhD studies majored in a relatively new research area called Fish Processing and Quality Management conducted at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (2010 -2014).

Barely seven months after his PhD graduation, Associate Prof. Fanuel Kapute’s roles broadened beyond teaching and research at a Public – Mzuzu University located in the Northern Region of Malawi. He also has assumed a position of the Head in the Department of Fisheries whose managerial roles include coordination of Postgraduate programmes specifically the Master of Science in Fisheries. Before joining Mzuzu University, he taught at Bunda College of Agriculture in the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Science for 7 years from 2005.

He has to his credit several publications including a manual published by VDM Verlag, in Germany which is used in the teaching of Fish Processing and Quality Management at Undergraduate level. He has supervised over 10 MSc and 25 BSc students in the fields of aquaculture, capture fisheries, fish quality management, extension and several inter-related fields in fisheries science.

The RUFORUM doctoral programs aim to drive and catalyze change and ensure that Africa is directly involved in the process of developing the capacity needed to staff its universities and train the new wave of graduates and leaders that can meet these challenges.
